Vihara Phra Monkhon Bophit is located adjacent to the Royal Palace , south of Wat Phra Si Sanphet , Pratuchai sub district , Phranakom Sri Ayutthaya district , Phranakorn Sri Ayutthaya province . lt was built to sheltr a large Buddha image , Phra Mongkhon Bophit , with its measures of approximately 9 meters across the lap and 12 meters in height . It was not clear when exactly the Buddha image was sculpted . However , according to the Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya , in the reign of King Songtham , the Buddha image was moved from its original location , approximately 200 meters to the east of its current location . A Mondop ( a tier - top structure ) was built over the sculpture . The transfer to the new location was due to needed space for building a royal funeral pyre for royal cremation ceremonies .
During the reign of King Sua , a Ughtning struck the spire of the Mondop . The roof caught fire and collapsed down on the Buddha image The head of the Buddha image was damaged . King Sua had the mondop demolshed and ordered the construction of a new tall preaching hall . Another restoration took place during the reign of King Borommakot . After the second fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, the Vihara was abandoned and deteriorated through times . The head and an arm of the Buddha image were broken . It underwent another renovation during the reign of King Rama V and another time during the administration of Field Marshal Plaek Phibunsongkhram in 1956, when the Vihara was restored to have the present day\'s appearance .

This monastery is situated in the field called ‘Thung Phu Khao Thong’ that means ‘Golden Mountain’ which located on the northwest outside of the Ayuthaya city isle. The main monument is a huge squared-based Stupa with indented corners, the subsidiary monuments are the ordination hal ( Ubosot ) on the east side and the shrine of Buddha image ( Viham ) on the west side . Based on Ayutthaya Chronicle, this monastery was established in 1387 A. D. by the royal order of King Ramesuan and the historical document also mentioned that the huge stupa was built by the Ayutthaya’s King in celebration of his victory over the Burmese invaders.
