B & C: National Museum & Sultan ParkOpening hours are from Saturday – Thursday 9am – 5pm.The NationalMuseum located inside the Sultan Park houses acollection of traditional antiques, artifacts, royal regalia and oldphotographs. The museum costs US$3 or RF 38. Entrance to the adjoining sultanpark is free.
The US$7.8 million Maldives National Museum,built and financed by the Chinese government and presented to Maldiveson July 10, 2010, was officially opened two weeks later by President MohamedNasheed on Independence Day July 26.
D: Mulee-Aage (The PresidentialPalace)Built by Sultan Shamsuddeen in the year 1906 andlocated behind Medhuziyaaraiy. This premise was first used by President MohamedAmin Didi of the first republic in 1953. The Presidents of the 2ndand 3rd republics (President Ibrahim Nasir and President MaumoonAbdul Gayyoom respectively) used Mulee-aage as the official presidentialresidence as well. The years 1998-2008 saw the former president Gayyoom departto Theemuge. However, Mulee-aage has once again become the official residenceof the Maldivian President.
E: Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiiy) This ancient mosque was built in 1656 during the reignof sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. The interiors and exteriors of this mosque areintricately carved with Arabic writings and omamental patterns. Unfortunatelynon-Muslims are not allowed inside without prior permission.
F: Lunch at Thai Wok Restaurant
Medhuziy AaraiyThis is the tomb of the Moroccan traveler Abu- alBarakaath-UI Barbary, the scholar responsible for the mass conversion of the Maldivesto Islam. This tomb is located near the Friday Mosque.
G: Islamic Center (Mosque)Opened in 1984, this is Male’s largest and best-knownarchitectural landmark. The complex contains the largest mosque in the Maldives,topped with a golden dome and capable of accommodating 5, 000 people. Visitorsare welcome inside outside prayer hours, but no interior photographs areallowed. Entrance is free.
H: Theemuge (The Former PresidentialPalace and Current Supreme Court)Located in “Orchid Magu”, Theemuge was the massiveresidence of the former president from 1988 onwards up until the year 2008. Thecurrent president Mohamed Nasheed transferred the Supreme Court of the Maldivesand offices to Theemuge. This is a worthy sight with a design boasting of amagnificent mixed look of traditional and modern elements.
I: The Fish Market & Local MarketJust west of Independence square (Jumhooree Maidhan)and with a group of fishing boats docked just opposite, this is where fishwhich includes mainly Tuna varieties such as skip-jack tuna and yellow-fin tunaare brought, gutted and sold for consumption of the locals of Male.
