BaliBali is one of more than 17,000 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago. The island is renowned for its rugged coastlines, sandy beaches along with its hilly and mountainous interior. Gay SceneBali is Indonesia's most important tourist destination accounting for almost 80% of all international visitors to the country. The island attracts over 2 million tourists a year – particularly from Australia and China. The growth in tourism over the past few decades has contributed to the development of a thriving, although relatively small, gay scene in the southwest coastal area of Seminyak. The nightlife is focused around a number of popular bars in Janan Camplung Tanduk (also known as Dhyana Pura). These venues are open all year around and generally get busy every evening from around 11pm – midnight. The overwhelming majority of gay visitors stay at mainstream resorts or in private villas but there are a number of exclusively gay resorts, many of which are "clothing optional".When to VisitBali has pleasant daytime temperatures all year round, varying between 20-33⁰ C. The west monsoon brings high humidity from December to March, but there is still plenty of sun during the day, with rains starting in the late afternoon or evening and passing quickly. From June to September, humidity is low and it can be quite cool in the evenings.Where to StayIf you prefer to stay in a gay environment, there is an excellent choice of gay resorts in Seminyak, Kuta and Legian. Mixwell is a great place to hang out before heading to the clubs. The bar has a reputation for fun nightly drag shows and attracts a nice mix of both tourists and local guys. Best time to go is from 11pm-2am.Bali JoeJalan Camplung Tanduk Arcade 8, Seminyak Weekday opening times: 21:00 - 04:00Weekend opening times: 21:00 - 04:00If you find Mixwell, then you will find Bali Joe as it is quite literally next door. You will likely end up bar-hopping between these two venues. Bali Joe matches Mixwell with its own cute go-go dancers and highly popular drag shows that feature plenty of audience participation singing along to popular gay anthems.Throughout the night, there are a variety of stage and bar-top performances including some pretty stunning Balinese go-go dancers and excellent lip-synced female impersonators. We loved the Beyoncé impersonator but had no idea how her wig remains attached to her head during this particularly high energy dance routine!Drink prices are not the cheapest, but good entertainment is never free.Beaches:Batu Belig BeachThe area is located close to the W Retreat Hotel and just about 20 metres from Zen 4 Men. The easiest way to get to this beach is via Jalan Batu Belig.Batu Belig Beach is situated on the southern coast of Bali between Canggu and Berewa, close to Seminyak. The gay area is centered around a little café that has had most of its infrastructure stripped to the ground by the local government (all beach cafes on this beach have to had to remove buildings). The tables, chairs and sun loungers remain and food and drinks are still served.Puta @ Pantai 66 (Doube Six Beach) In front of Ocean Hotel, Double Six Beach"There is a fantastic little 7-metre strip of gay beach by Ocean Hotel on Double Six Beach in Legian. Run by Putra, it attracts a steady flow of both local and foreign gay guys.As the sun goes down the area attracts a much larger mixed, but mostly gay and definitely gay-friendly crowd. The area can be difficult to find at first but the rainbow flags are easy to spot when you know what to look out for. There are chairs and umbrellas for rent and cold drinks available. If you are gay and want to be looked after on the beach then this is the place to go. Nice gay beaches are in Instabul and Barcelona too.
