My last vacation was 10 years ago in Hokkaido. Six months ago, I suddenly came out of an idea about going back to Hokkaido again with my beloved, Yu, who loves traveling and almost left her trails in every countries in Europe when she studied in Paris. As I was happily contemplating the return of Hokkaido, Yu told me that she had a friends’ wedding to attend in Fukuoka in October. “Excellent! After the wedding, we go to Hokkaido right away.” I said. Yu disagree and despised my plan because she thought I might not be aware of the location of Fukuoka. Yes, the exact locations I knew about Japan were Hokkaido and Tokyo back then. I also thought it would take less than 3 hours by bullet train (Shinkansen) from Fukuoka to Hokkaido. Actually, a 3-hour Shinkansen could only take you to Osaka. If a passenger insists on taking train to Sapporo of Hokkaido from Osaka, it would cost him more than 22 hours to see the beauty of the natural wildness in the northernmost island of Japan. So after Yu’s reminding me of a high-school level of geography, we reached an agreement just to stay in Kyushu, not going anywhere. These are the plans we designed in a Sunday night together in an all-night-long Skype meeting. Due to the more than 2000 kilometers distance between my working place and Yu’s, long-hour Skype meeting is a must for us to make a traveling plan. Day 1: I arrive in Fukuoka on the first day. The same AirBnB room for the next 3 days.Day 2: Yu has to skip the ceremony to rush from the airport to the wedding banquet directly. I would attend the wedding ceremony on behalf of Yu, even though I don’t know how the bride and the bridegroom look like. I think I would just jump into a Japanese wedding ritual when I see the bridegroom is not a Japanese. Day 3: Hang around in Fukuoka all day long.Day 4: Take two trains from Fukuoka, transferred in Kagoshima, to Ibusuki. Stay in a Ryokan Iseebi Sou. (Ryokan means traditional Japanese hotel and it has different standards than fancy star hotels)Day 5: Hang around somewhere near Ryokan Iseebi Sou.Day 6: Take three trains from Ibusuki to Hitoyoshi. Stay in Hitoyoshi Ryokan.Day 7: Take a rarely remained steamed train from Hitoyoshi to Kumamoto. Stay in a hotel in the downtown area of the city.Day 8: Go back to Fukuoka by train. AirBnB room.Day 9: Parting is just a sweet sorrow. Very simple indeed. However, so many surprises waiting for us to discover and appreciate.
