The history museum in Shumen was set up in 1857 when Sava Dobroplodni (1820 – 1894), a teacher from the Bulgarian Revival Period, organised the first expedition to the remains of the old Bulgarian capital Veliki Preslav (Great Preslav) together with students and when they exhibited their finds in the local school.

Shumen Plateau Nature Park is located in the eastern part of the Danubian Plain, near the town of Shumen. It lies on the territory of Shumen Plateau and takes up an area of 3 929.9 hectares. It was declared a nature park in 1980 with the aim of preserving its valuable flora and fauna species, its tableland landscape and its tourist spots and places for rest.

Shumen Fortress is one of the most famous landmarks in Bulgaria and the Shumen region. The remains of the fortress are 3 kilometres away from the centre of modern-day Shumen. The fortress is situated in the Shumen Plateau.
