In 1904, after a group of old houses were demolished, Francois & middot; Ruud square was built. The square is decorated by a famous Dijon born sculptor who is also the author of the relief "Marseilles" on the triumphal arch in Paris. Dijon people also called the square bareuzai, named after a statue of a man trampling on grapes on a fountain in the center of the square. Stepping on grapes is an important part of traditional wine making. The feet of the people who step on grapes become red, that is, bas rose.
