In 1998, the World Heritage Committee commented that Santiago de Compostela was the ultimate goal of thousands of devout pilgrims throughout the middle ages. They swarmed here from all over Europe. In order to reach Spain, they had to cross France. The projects included in the world heritage include a series of important historical sites, marking the route of pilgrims through France.

The bell gate of Bordeaux is the bell tower of the former city hall of Bordeaux. This is a rare civilian building that has been preserved since the middle ages. It was built at the original gate of St. Eloy in the 15th century, adjacent to the Church of St. Eloy in the 12th century. In the 13th century, the gate opened here, on the pilgrimage road of Santiago de Compostela. The big bell door consists of two 40 meter high circular towers connected in the middle, decorated with golden lion insignia.

从勃艮第门沿着维克多雨果林荫道往前走不远，右侧一个街口进去，就可以看见波尔多大钟门了，这里曾经是波尔多前市政厅的钟楼，是一座罕见的、自中世纪保留至今的建筑物，大钟门包括中间相连的两个40米高的圆形塔楼和装饰有金色狮子纹章。

The streets of old Bordeaux are so woven that it's easy to get lost. Let's walk along the Saint James road to the big bell gate. The Grosse Cloche is one of the oldest belfries in France, in the heart of the city。 The gateway where the bell is hung also had a defensive function and served as a prison. Young people who misbehaved were confined there, shut in by a door 10 cm thick with enormous bolts. It was joked at the time that they stayed in the "Hotel du Lion d’Or" – an allusion to the weather vane on the central dome with a representation of a lion, symbolising the kings of England.

In fact, the great bell gate is not very eye-catching. After living in Bordeaux quickly, I went back and forth from the bell gate many times before I realized that it was also a historical site. The clock tower is located in the residential building not far from the pedestrian street. Once when I was walking on the bluestone road alone in rainy days, I watched the bell gate gradually moistened by the rain, which made me feel lonely in a foreign country.
