The East Gate bell is located at the original entrance of the ancient Roman built Chester defense fort. It is one of the most important landmarks in Chester City, and is praised as the top bell in England besides Big Ben. At present, the east gate was built in 1768. It is a three arch stone structure, below which is the pedestrian access to the city. In 1899, in order to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne, the East Gate bell was added to the gate. The East Gate bell is designed by Chester architect John Douglas. It stands high on a hollow iron tower. There are clock faces on all sides. The top of the bell is made of iron. East gate clock in Chester was established in the late 19th century to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday.
