Finally, I have to acknowledge that Amsterdam is the most crazy city on this planet. Don't even mention its red-light district, drug dealers, same-sex marriage, distinct buildings and beautiful sceneries, the city offers a lot more, good and bad...
As I have been traveling alone, safety is really kind of concern. I arrived in town at 8pm a few days ago. After checking in a youth hostel, I was ready to have a first taste of the city. The hostel staff told me not to stay outside at 11pm. But who would expect that the danger can happen during the day?
The next day was gorgeous. I had been wondering around the city and exploring the canals, bridges, trees and buildings the whole morning. At lunch time, I saw a booth selling sandwiches surrounded by people. Then I had one delicious one with salmon, recommended by a Dutch.
A few minutes later, I was at an intersection, waiting for the change of lights. A man approached me and said something I didn't understand. Then he said, "Oh, you don't speak Dutch. Can you take a photo of me?" "Sure." I answered without any hesitation. Who would refuse to take a photo for somebody? He then explained that he wanted to have the picture with a building which is about 20 meters away from the intersection. After walking for 10 meters, I started to wonder why he doesn't ask somebody else at the scene for the help. Then he operated on his cell phone. I thought he was trying to pull out the photonic program.
Suddenly, another guy came from the opposite way and said, "I am police. Give me your passport." "Oh, God. FAKE. They want to rob me." This is the first idea coming to my mind. I thought about the similar story happened in Italy to somebody. "I've got to figure out a way to escape.” I tried to calm down, as I realized that they could not do something dangerous. Anyway, it's day time. And I was close to an intersection. Then I said, "Show me your certificate." He was kind of surprised, but still said, "OK". At that time, the two of them were facing me. And I wanted to go back to the intersection.
When I stepped back, a third guy approached me. He showed a card with a photo. Hell! Who would have time to check whether it is police certificate? I would rather believe it is not. I would not be able to read the stupid language anyway. Who cares? (When I talk to an American in Germany, he said it could be a driver's license or something.)
"Did I do anything wrong?" I said. The man holding the "certificate" said, “Are you with him?" He referred to the one who wanted to take a photo. "No, I don't know him." After answering that, I started to run. "I would shout for HELP if anything goes wrong." The guy tried grabbing me. I blocked his hand and escaped, shouting to them, "Is this what the police do in Netherlands? Fuckk!" One of them said, " Hey, it is OK." Only two seconds, I was already at the booth, looking back. They were looking at me too. I went another way, they never appeared.
Gosh! What an adventure!
